Topic: Address Intergenerational Economic Mobility and Opportunity Gap Problems with Computational Approaches.

Speaker: Riyi Qiu

Abstract: Intergenerational economic mobility has been a serious concern for the American society. The problem receives more attention from the city of Charlotte since it was placed the bottom in the rank of 50 cities' intergenerational economic mobility. This unequal situation is highly related to the widening opportunity gap. We try to understand the problem by reviewing sociologists' and economists' research which is mostly based on associations, correlations, or linear regressions. Then we investigate how did data scientists look into these issues with the help of more sophisticated computational methods, such as Machine Learning and Agent-Based Modeling. In the end, we propose possible approaches to further understand and relieve the problem.
