Topic: Water, Energy, Cooling, and Complexity: How Simple Interactions Create Complex Dynamics

Presenter: Rob Abbott, Chief Data Scientist, Aquanomix

There are over a million cooling tower installations globally, supporting a broad range of applications from power generation to building cooling to manufacturing processes and many others. The water to support these tower operations comes from a variety of sources with different properties, and the design of these systems vary in small but nontrivial ways; however, even tiny variations in design or system operating parameters can demonstrate power law effects on the performance of the systems. We will provide an overview of how these systems work and discuss how complex systems analysis is used to dynamically model water ecosystems and the effects of various components system efficiency.
